Vitiligo is a condition where the skin gets discolored and loses pigment, resulting in appearance of irregular white patches. Factors responsible for Vitiligo, also known by the name of leukoderma, have not been completely explored and understood. There are a few options available to cure this disease to some extent, but a complete and permanent Vitiligo treatment is not known yet. Many doctors advise Vitiligo patients to go for Phototherapy. This is a widely used treatment, which entails exposure to ultraviolet rays causing the skin to tan. The treatment uses a substance called Psoralen, which is either consumed orally or applied on the affected area. The white patches are then exposed to UVA rays, resulting in activation of melanocytes, the cells that are responsible for melanin production. Skin grafting is another popular
Vitiligo treatment. In skin grafting, doctors surgically replace the diseased part of the skin with a healthy melanocyte rich graft. The new cells start manufacturing melanin, thus re-pigmenting the skin. In some severe cases where the condition has affected almost the entire skin surface, there is an option of de-pigmenting the unaffected areas too. The de-pigmentation is done on cosmetic grounds, as after the procedure, the skin color of the healthy and affected areas become the same. Doctors usually recommend this as the final solution as it is an acute step. Some natural and herbal remedies are also used for Vitiligo treatment. Ginkgo biloba and oil extracted from peppermint are often recommended in such treatments. Many cosmetics are also being offered, which are made specially to conceal
Vitiligo patches. Even though a lot of research is still required to identify the true causes of this skin disorder, these Vitiligo treatments can offer both long and short-term relief to the patients. With the fields of biotechnology and genetics advancing day by day, a better cure could be on the horizon. For more information on vitiligo visit:
