Vocational Assessment Center

A Vocational Assessment is a series of tests that are provided to see what type of career that would be a good fit for someone

. This is a service that's usually provided to people who have mental disabilities and/or physical mental disabilities. The tests that are provided are Learning Ability, Achievement, Aptitude, Perceptual, Dexterities, Interests, and Personality. There are several different tests in each category.

After the tests are provided they're scored on a written report. The report will include the test results and the client'shistory. It'll also include the opinion of a professional as what types of jobs he or she thinks this individual can do.

It's best if the professional who writes the report actually administers the tests so they can see their behaviors and how the client reacts to each test given. A persons behavior can determine their ability to handle stress in the workplace.

This is a very specialized field that has few experts. The person who does this type of work should have at least a masters degree. They also need to attend trainings often to obtain and keep their certifications. The certifications will vary depending on the state requirements.

A person who works in the Vocational Assessment field should have experience working with individuals who have disabilities. You really need this requirement, because most of your clients will have disabilities.

You need to be able to read people to know what to recommend because it is not based just on test results. You need to be able to know what this individual will be able to do out in the workplace.

Someone can show a lot of interest in being a Police Officer and do good on the tests but they may not be able to handle the stress. If that is the case then you don't want to recommend a job that the client cannot do. They're seeing you for the purpose of getting an outside opinion.

There are unfortunately some people who are in this field that really shouldn't be in it. They lack the education and/or training that it takes. Many people can provide tests to someone but most people don't know what to do with the results. I personally have seen in-depth Vocational Assessments which are very impressive. I have seen other ones that are very broad, which makes it look like the person who wrote the report wasn't qualified to do so.

A Vocational Assessment is a very useful and needed service. When someone has a disability they are sometimes more limited in certain areas. Even if someone doesn't have a disability it would still be beneficial. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and choosing a proper career is a key to being successful.
