Voice Over Talent Pointers For When You Are Under The Weather
For voice actors, getting sick is a particular inconvenience
. Working freelance has many perks, but paid sick leave sure isn't one of them!
Although you might be tempted to stick out your fever, finish an important project for a big client, and lie to yourself that you'll make your voice sound perkier in post production, you're better off giving other areas of your voice over business more attention!
Just to reiterate that first point -- you know you are going to get sick at some point, and it's never going to be at a convenient time! Do yourself (and your clients) a favor and simply let them know that you're under the weather and unable to complete the project at the moment. By respecting your clients' deadlines, and allowing them option to hire a new voice talent, you are actually securing future work together. It's never a good feeling to pass up work you want to be doing, but you should never send your clients less than your best.
Don't despair! Sick days needn't be wasted on your couch when there are so many creative things to do in your studio. Suggestions from our Facebook page:
1. Mix and match existing files.
2. Pick some famous opening narrations for TV shows and have fun re-recording them. (For example, "Space ... the final frontier ...")
3. Create a fictional TV station and record a creative newscast for it.
4. Practice copywriting for fake or real products or services.
5. Network! Marketing!
In order to stay on top of all the latest and greatest in the voice over industry, it would have to be your full time job. When you're sick, catch up on social media posts, articles, tweets, blogs and comments. Also, make sure your own website is up to date with a list of projects you are really proud of. Check out new studio equipment online, and come up with a dream list of ways you could improve your sound if money weren't an obstacle. When was the last time you sent out a newsletter to your clients?
Sick days are perfect cleaning days! Reorganize your studio, take some Lysol to your equipment, and organize your invoices.
If you're really under the weather, then surrendering to your jammies and daytime TV for a day or two won't hurt you either.
