Voip - Everything You Want To Know
There's been a lot of talk about VoIP recently and for good reason
. Voiceover IP is quickly becoming the technology that will replace traditional phones in the coming years. This has largely been because of the proliferation of the Internet as well as the constantly increasing speeds which the average person is exposed to. While most VoIP adoption is as of now addressed to business users, regular home owners are also looking closely at VoIP offers from established companies such as Vonage. But what is VoIP and how does it work?
Part of the confusion of VoIP stems from its flexibility - which is one of its greatest strengths. There are many implementations of VoIP and it's easy for a person to become a VoIP provider given a modest set of means. Since we're still in the early days of VoIP, many businesses are experimenting with their offerings, trying to find out which ones work and which ones don't. But underneath it all, the concept of VoIP is a simple one.
Put simply, VoIP uses the Internet which enables you to talk to someone else at the other end of the line. Just like you watch YouTube videos with sound, voice signals can travel from person to person over the Internet. In principle, this should be easy. We all use email and many of us use it for free. Yet VoIP isn't free for two good reasons.
In the first place, VoIP data isn't like your regular web page data. It needs to be arranged carefully so that you hear the voice in the way it's meant to be heard. Unlike your web page which can load the text, or the images depending on which comes first, you need to hear the beginning of a sentence before you hear the end! So VoIP traffic needs to be managed carefully to make sure you don't hear something garbled.
In the second place, most calls to and from a VoIP system will be connecting to a normal phone at the other end. This incurs a cost to the VoIP provider as you can imagine. Also, there isn't yet any universal way to replace telephone numbers which are still firmly connected to traditional telcos.
These two reasons are why VoIP isn't free for everyone to use. But when compared to traditional phone calls, they are remarkable for their cheap rates and excellent quality. And there you have it - VoIP in a nutshell!
