, the Passat was introduced. The Passat was critical to the car company and to its success as well as its survival. The company needed a car that would sell well in order to make up for the declining sales of the Beetle. The Passat was a response to this, being more attractive, larger and more stylish. Originally, the Passat was constructed with VW parts that used a four cylinder overhead camshaft and 1.51 petrol engines, which not surprisingly, were also used in the Audi 8.0 sedan. The Passat followed suit in having either a four speed manual transmission or a three speed automatic available as options, depending on personal preference.

The Volkswagen Beetle parts that were the inspiration for construction of the Passat were made to be strong enough to last many years before they had to be repaired or replaced. There are many updates, revisions, improvements and modifications that have taken place for the Passat since its first run back in 1973, which is exactly why even today it continues to be an excellent selling vehicle for the folks at Volkswagen.
