VW Sharan Engine: Europes Best People Carrier

Produced at AutoEuropa and sold under three manufacturer marquees, Volkswagen, SEAT and Ford, Sharan is the top ranked MPV in Europe. AutoEuropa was signed between Volkswagen and Ford to build a manufacturing plant in Portugal, which will mainly cater to MPV demand in Europe. This production plant mainly produced VW Sharan, SEAT Alhambra and Ford Galaxy, though Galaxys interior and exterior varies from both SEAT and VW. This assembly line played a pivotal role in driving out Toyotas Previa from Europe.

Volkswagen Sharan engine is front mounted and its a front wheel drive minivan. First generation Sharan was launched in 1995 and produced till 2010. During these years three major updates (Mark 1, Mark 1A & Mark 1B) were inculcated in Sharan. These updates were extensive and included many additions from design changes to inclusion of new technology in engines and gearboxes. The first generation Volkswagen Sharan engines (petrol) ranged from 1.8 to 2.8 and in diesel 1.9 and 2.0 litre engines were offered with varying horsepower.

Mark 1, 1995 till 2000, was launched with 1.8, 2.0 and 2.8 litre petrol engines and a 1.9 litre diesel engine was also introduced. Mark1 was heavily praised by press and independent car reviewers, BBCs Top Gear and What Car awarded it Best People Carrier award in 1998 and 1996 respectively. Mark 1A, 2000 to 2004, also received Auto Expresss coveted Best New Car award. Mark 1A VW Sharan engines (petrol) were offered in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.8 litre capacities. The last variant in first generation VW Sharan was Mark 1B, 2004 till 2010. It was launched with 1.8, 2.0 and 2.8 litre petrol engines along with 1.9 and 2.0 litre diesel engines.

First generation Sharan was launched with option of 5, 6 speed manual and five speed Tiptronic auto gearbox. Second generation Volkswagen Sharan is also built in same manufacturing plant but from engine capacities to vehicle dimensions, almost everything is massively altered. The 2010 onwards Sharan is lower, wider and longer compared to original Sharan. Second generation Volkswagen Sharan engines (petrol) range from 1.4 to 2.0 litre along with two variants of 2.0 litre diesel engine.

Volkswagen also launched a LPG or flexible fuel variant of Sharan in 2006 which is capable of covering 100 km in just 9.6 liters. The most recent Ford Galaxy is not manufactured at AutoEuropa plant and is now very distant from SEAT Alhambra and VW Sharan in almost every aspect. Surprisingly even when Galaxy was produced alongside Sharan and Alhambra, it was classified as the Least Satisfying vehicle in UK.
