Wakeboarding Taking Asia By Storm
Thailand Wakeboarding is an exhilarating water sport
, which sees you ride a single board whilst being pulled by a speedboat or a cable around a lake. Born out of surfing and waterskiing, it has really taken off since the 1990s, and attracts a wide number of people to it, all of whom love the buzz of riding the water. Wakeboarding in Thailand is popular because it is not highly technical or expensive to rent gear. A first timer can be standing up within a couple of hours (with some luck!)
The more advanced you are, the more adventurous you can become, and using a ramp in the water you can do awesome tricks and stunts. Be careful, wakeboarding soon stops becoming a hobby and becomes a way of life!
Thailand is a hugely popular wakeboarding destination- tropical surroundings and warm conditions, not to mention the thousands of kilometres of beautiful beaches from which to enjoy it. There is nothing quite like skimming over the clear glassy waves and looking back to the shore of a stunning palm fringed beach.
There are a number of ways to go wakeboarding in Bangkok. Taco Lake, for example, is only half an hour outside Bangkok in Samut Prakam Province, and offers wakeboarding lessons using a cable system (simply being pulled by an overhead cable). All equipment can be hired for a few dollars and it makes for a great break from the pace of the city. Not only that, it is an excellent form of exercise.
Thai Wake Park is another good place for wakeboarding in Bangkok. The park is located near Rangsit and the large lake has an island in the middle to reduce surface ripples thus making your experience more enjoyable. Thai Wake Park has numerous jumps and rails to test your skills and many wakeboarding events are held here each year.
Even in the North of Thailand wakeboarding in Chiang Rai is taking off and Planete Wakeboard is a wakeboarding company located on a huge lake with cable pulls and speed boats producing 3ft waves. If you get tired of wakeboarding, you can try wakesurfing too!
Most popular beaches in Thailand will have wakeboarding sessions (usually for 15 minutes), although be on the look out for dodgy boats as the touts can be unregulated.
There are also a number of specialised wakeboarding 'camps', who can take you to some amazing locations around different islands.
Whether you are a complete beginner, a keen surfer wanting to try something new, or a seasoned pro looking to experience wakeboarding in phenomenal surroundings then you will find what you're looking for in Thailand. And here at Action Sports Asia you will find out everything you need to know to enjoy this addictive and adrenaline fuelled sport.
