Wall Coatings for Damp Proofing Walls
Autumn is sitting just around the corner flexing its rainy muscles and getting ready to do some serious seeping
. That's not good for the nation's walls walls that are exclusively built from porous materials, sitting on top of ground that collects water in unseen lakes. Unseen, that is, until the lakes well up through the aforementioned porous walls and start spreading damp and mould over interior surfaces.
Damp proofing walls with proper
wall coatings is the only guaranteed way to prevent cracked render, stippling, scribbling, mould, peeling wallpaper, permanent condensation and, eventually, structural collapse.
Even damp proofing alone isn't good enough. Most modern houses are built on what is called a water course a system of irrigation designed to leach standing water away from the foundations of the home and out into neutral underground spaces. So far so good until the damp course gets clogged, which it will after a few years. Leaves, twigs, mulch, silt, dead animals they find their way into the runnels of the damp course and the water it was supposed to be channelling away suddenly can't go anywhere. What next? Rising damp. Damp proofing walls with proper wall coatings can't reverse that process so the damp course needs checking for blockages and disrepair first. Any disrepair found needs attending to and existing damp in the masonry should be dried out. At this point, proper damp proofing materials can be applied to the external surfaces of the walls.
Done properly, damp proofing can provide decades of protection to homes in even the wettest parts of the United Kingdom. The proper way to go about damp proofing is as follows: check the damp coursing (as above), get it fixed, get the masonry dried, treat the whole building heavily in the first instance and then go for annual touch ups. Damp proofing walls in this way, with the proper, weather and damp resistant wall coatings, can add years and years of life to any property not to mention ensuring that the building retains its value.
Modern damp proofing materials contain several preparations designed to give the best overall protection to a home. They're anti bacterial, which prevents mould from spreading, kills new mould and in some cases can actually retract the course of existing mould. They're weather proof, guaranteed to hold against even the fiercest British storms (barring, of course, what the insurance folk would describe as an act of God). Damp proofing walls with them ensures modern protection even for old stone provided, mind, that the preliminary steps outlined herein have been taken first. Using high quality wall coatings on already damp masonry will only seal that damp in creating an environment where the foundations of the building weaken while its shell remains impervious, until the day everything falls apart.
It's not cheap to fully damp proof a house but it's a whole heck of a lot cheaper than having to move because the foundation has fallen to pieces. With autumn really knocking at the door, start thinking about damp proofing walls properly. That check, and those modern wall coatings, could save hundreds of thousands of pounds in the long run.
