Sykes can add role model to her long list of titles thanks to the GLADD's Stephen. F. Kolzak Award. The award is given to a media professional who is openly LGBT and has made an impact promoting LGBT rights. The Bay Area Reporter spoke with Sykes about the award, and she wasn't kidding about being flattered. She said, "I was really touched. At first I was like, man, it's so much so soon. Do I really deserve this award? I understood what they were saying. Being one of the few African-American performers who is open and out, I know I reach a lot of people." Obviously, plenty of people in the entertainment world are under the impression she deserves this accolade and more.
Another organization who thought she deserved to be recognized was the NCAAP. Sykes was nominated for two awards at the 41st NAACP Image Awards, which took place Feb. 26, 2010. Her television show, The Wanda Sykes Show, was nominated for Outstand Talk Series. BET's The Mo'Nique Show ended up taking home the award. Her HBO special Wanda Sykes: I'ma Be Me was also nominated for Outstanding Variety (Series or Special). The Michael Jackson Memorial ended up taking home that prize, however. Her talk show is rumored not to be returning next season, but that will just give the star even more time for standup and other projects.
Standup will always be a part of Sykes career, at least according to an interview with HollywoodChicago.com. She talked about her views on standup comedy and said, "It's where I started. It all begins with stand-up for me. I still enjoy it. If I go through a phase without it for a while, focusing on just film or television, I start to feel funny. It's what I know, it's my confirmation [laughs]." Even with those comments, Sykes has had a pretty good run in both television and film. Her television appearances include multiple comedy specials and a starring role in The New Adventures of Old Christine with Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus. She has also had roles in films like Evan Almighty and Monster-In-Law.
Sykes wasn't always hell-bent on a comedy career. In fact, she has a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Eventually, she decided to try standup and was hooked. She worked her way up and became a writer for HBO's Chris Rock Show. Since then, she has won multiple awards, from an American Comedy Awards to Emmys. All the while, she hasn't lost the spark that wooed fans at her first standup show in Washington, D.C. so many years ago.
