Many people view losing excess weight as a negative thing
. Sort of like a punishment for overeating. It is harder to make the necessary changes in ones life when this mindset is present. The change becomes much harder when viewed as "I will starve myself and exercise excessively until I lose the weight, and then, having paid back my debt I can then return to my normal real life".
But if you had a change in mindset and could see yourself improving strength, fitness and energy levels and the resulting loss of excess weight as central to creating a more enjoyable and happier life you would be more likely to make changes that will truly get you to your goal. The very first thing you need to understand is that no quick fix diet or 'on/off' exercise regime is ever going to get you a strong, lean, shapely, slim healthy body, and that is really what you want isn't it?
All successful changes in behavior are greatly influenced by attitude and mindset. So, this is the part that needs to be worked on first. The very first thing you need to understand and accept is that if you wish to lose weight you have to rebuild and reboot your metabolism. This can only come from toning up your muscular system and you can only do this when you work your muscles through their ranges of movement under a load - strength training exercise.
We now know that long slow endurance type activity (walking, jogging or cycling etc) that we used to believe was necessary for fat loss will never ever give us the boost that is needed in the metabolic rate so that fat is burned off the body. Your muscles are where fat is burned so their improved condition is critical if weight is to be lost.
One of the most important aspects of toning your muscles is the re-balancing of your hormonal levels to help with losing weight. The stress hormone cortisol is reduced with exercise. This is a fat storage hormone that can be working against you without you realizing it in our busy fast paced world. This hormone is responsible for food cravings that can lead to overeating. Proper muscle toning exercise will also stimulate growth hormones that will increase your metabolism for faster fat loss.
Low intensity activities cannot do this and that is why they are not effective for fat loss.
We used to believe that weight loss was simply a matter of 'calories in, calories out' but we now know that our hormones determine whether we burn fat or store fat. Our exercise program must increase our metabolism so it is working for us long after the exercise session has finished.
So, if you can change this one aspect of your mindset and say a permanent goodbye to diets and 'fat burning' workouts and start a proper strength training program you will be well on the way to successful weight loss. This means you will be able to say hello to a body you will be happy to live in for the rest of your days.
