Want to Be a Good Leader? Start Listening
If you want to excel in the field of leadership
, you must start thinking out of the box. Contrary to what most people think about leadership skills, it is not all the time being verbal. Good leadership skill also demands one to be a patient listener. However, it takes a little extra concentration, active attention as well as effort from the other end to strike a note with your target audience.
A common problem that most people face while speaking in front of an audience is to move ahead in terms of thought. This may in turn create communication gaps between the speaker and the listener.
Listening, like speaking, is an art and both are interrelated. If you want to be a good leader, you have to start listening. The trick is to convey your response to the speaker both verbally as well as non-verbally. This can again be in the form of gestures and small nods of appreciation. This in turn will further help you to gain confidence. The following checklist will can help you hone your leadership skills to the fullest.
Don't talk: It is a common habit to interrupt in a conversation. If you want to excel in leadership and earn accolades from your colleagues, the best way out is not to talk proficiently. Try to be observant and speak when only the situation demands.
Listen carefully: This is yet another way to attract your target audience. The trick is to be patient and understanding. In addition one needs to be systematic and observant as well. These are intrinsic leadership skills to start with.
Ask questions: One needs to ask questions as well, and not play a dodo completely. If you have any question in mind which is relevant to what your speaker is talking about, just drop it.
Provide feedback: Coming out with the right feedback at the most appropriate time is the basis of good leadership.
Respect your listeners' sentiments: If you want to be a good leader, always respect your listeners' sentiments. It is ethically unjust to comment on something or somebody which may appear biased.
With all said and done, appreciate your listener for lending a patient ear to your hearing. All of these put together can surely help you master the art of leadership.
