War Horse: Galloping To Broadway Glory

Introduction

Introduction

Ever since War Horse has been adopted for stage, its popularity is rising at a rapid pace, so much so that Steven Spielberg made a movie of the same title based on the same novel. Broadway War Horse tickets are high in demand and it appears as if everyone is rushing to see the magical puppet who gallops on stages battlefield.

The show has been praised for its design, its puppetry and the message behind the story. The story, originally written for children, has been masterfully adapted for adults.

Story

Joey is a young foal bought at an auction by a Devonshire farmer. The farmer has a 16 year old son Albert, who trains the horse and becomes his friend. The horse Joey is bought by the British Army and he participates in the First World War as a War Horse. At one point during the story, the character who rides the horse dies during battle. The horse ends up in the German camp, and finally in no mans land.

The most unique thing about the story is that it brings Joeys struggles to life, and during the play one forgets that the horse being used on stage is a puppet. Joey faces death, disease and destruction while Albert relentlessly searches for him. Albert lies about his age to get enlisted in the army, so that he could bring his beloved horse back home.

Reviews and Reception

The show has received nothing but positive reviews from all major critics of stage. Some have claimed that it is full of magical moments, such as the Joeys transformation into a war horse. Others have called it an emotional ride that highlights the terrors of war.

The London production received best design awards and got nominated in several different categories for several different awards including the Laurence Olivier Awards in 2008 and 2010 and the Critics Circle Awards.

The Broadway production swept the 2011 Tony Awards clean in several categories including best play and best direction.

Production

When Michael Morpurgo wrote War Horse, he could not imagine it being adopted as a play. Ergo his surprised reaction when Nick Stafford brought up the idea. Marianne Elliot and Tom Morris direct the play. The show premiered in London in 2007, and was adopted by Broadway in 2011 after receiving great success at West End. The show is set to make several national tours in the coming years and has recently debuted in Canada with an all Canadian cast. In December, the show will premier in Melbourne and a non English version will premier in Germany in 2013.

Tickets

When a play inspires such positive reviews and gains such great success in such a limited time, it is bound to attract the attention of regular as well as occasional theatergoers. Several scheduled shows have already been sold out and tickets are being sold for future events. If you are looking for Broadway War Horse Tickets for upcoming shows, your best bet is to look online.
