Wastewater Wisdom Talk: Climbing Around
Journal (Water Pollution Control Federation), Vol
. 43
Climbing around is one of the most natural things the individual living thing can perform at almost any age. But the National Safety Council tells us that falling accidents account for one-fifth of all compensated injury cases of this nation, which is a good reason to analyze the problems that arise from climbing around.
Let's progress down to specific examples. If you are going to climb, look for the best way to do so first. If there is a nearby regular stairway, use it. Use the rail, there is no reason for urgency, and don't carry so much so as you can't see over it.
If there's a fixed
climbing ladder, use that. If there is no nearby staircase or fixed ladder, find a regular ladder. Plants mostly have safe ladders in the case of any kind of climbing mission. In fact, if you looked at your ladder manufacturer's catalog, you may be amazed by the amount of different specialty items they produce and provide to prevent workers from getting hurt.
We should be deadly serious about this question of falls and climbing around that can cause them. As soon as you fall 12 feet to a solid floor, your odds of having a disabling injury are pretty substantial, and your odds of being dead aren't slight either.
But there are times that you might have to achieve some elevation where there are no safe approaches, not even with a ladder. Or you can reach a specific destination via a ladder or stairway but might risk having to work in a situation where you might fall. In the first place, such a job must first be authorized, and secondly, it should be performed either by working with another worker or with safety belts and
construction harnesses.
All this boils down to three simple standards:
1. Use the safe way to progress to a different level
2. Use the proper equipment as soon as you get to that level.
3. Work on such jobs only as you are instructed to do so, and as soon as the job has been planned in relation to procedure and types of
climbing protection.
Otherwise, stay on the ground!
Maybe someday all workplaces will install small elevators to take workers to the appropriate level, but until such a day comes, let's use our heads when we climb, and let's keep on using our heads until we get both feet on the ground.
