Wat Saket- Temple Of The Golden Mount

Bangkok is home to many breathtaking temples decked in the finest fashion

. So, a visit to this unmatched city would be incomplete if its temples are left unexplored.

The intriguing places of worship found in Bangkok are different from many other Asian Buddhist temples since they are decked in unique style with the use of colored glass, pottery and even gold. Some of the most noteworthy temples in Bangkok include Wat Phra Kaew also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Wat Mahathat, Wat Benchamabophit, Wat Intharawihan, Wat Ratchabophit and many more. Among many of these charming and immensely sacred temples, Wat Saket is one that stands out.

Renowned also as the Temple of the Golden Mount, Wat Saket is an unusual place of worship which is well known for its chedi that stands 58-metres tall. Wat Saket is popular and sacred among Buddhists mainly because it is home to important relics of Buddha which have been placed carefully in this glittering gold chedi.

This 18th century shrine was the brainchild of King Rama I and it was created away from the walls of the new city. At one time this holy place was the main crematorium of the capital city since cremation ceremonies were not generally allowed within the walled city. It is also recorded that nearly 60,000 diseased victims were dumped in the grounds of the temple. This prominent landmark was also at one time renowned as the highest place in Bangkok.

It was King Rama III who built the Golden Mount which is a well known man made hill. The King took efforts to create a chedi but due to the soft soil it came down in no time. As a result, the King later prepared a pile of mud supported along with bricks in order to hold it up. With the use of more than 1,000 logs of teak, King Rama IV further supported the hill which was by then plunging into the muddy ground. The chedi that can be seen today was the result of the efforts of King Rama V and it was he who began to preserve the relic of Buddha inside it.

Providing the visitor with some stunning views, Wat Saket attracts large numbers of tourists both local and international during the Loy Kratong festival that takes place each year. Many people visit this temple today due to its sheer beauty, uniqueness and to find out interesting facts regarding its history in being the citys main cremation site.

As a fine service apartment on Sukhumvit, the Royal President Bangkok is ideally placed for an exciting expedition to this unusual temple. Among the many, Bangkok serviced apartments the Royal President Bangkok is known to offer its guests a wide range of unparalleled services to ensure a comfortable stay in the city.
