Read between the lines, and it's almost as if he was setting the table
for our disappointment, as if the movie he wrote and stars in wouldn't
live up to expectations. But frankly, our expectations for a
direct-to-DVD film (to be released Jan. 4), shot on a modest budget in
Grand Rapids, aren't that high in the first place - we understand
that 50 is finding his footing as a screen star, and that "Gun" isn't
likely to do anything more than offer genre-film escapism.
So, yes, the work-in-progress is apparent. The line readings are
sometimes stiff, and the story takes a little while to get in gear;
the pacing is slow as it ramps up to a third-act plot twist and
climactic shootout, but not unbearably so.
50 plays Rich, a street-level arms dealer pushing a new line of
military-grade heavy artillery provided to him by Gabriella (AnnaLynne
McCord). Their relationship goes beyond mere business, as a fairly
gratuitous sex scene illustrates (anybody know if that was really 50's
nude hindquarters on display, or a body double?).
For his crew, Rich recruits an old ally named Angel, played by Val
Kilmer, whose acting is limited to few words and a weary expression;
I'm not certain if Kilmer's going for minimalism or just phoning it
in. James Remar, typically sturdy in performance, and Paul Calderon
play the detectives trying to sniff out Rich's impending big deal,
which has left a trail of dead bodies in its wake.
