Over the last 25 years, a new form of comedy has emerged that combines a documentary style with a comedy plot. Mockumentaries have really become popular ever since This is Spinal Tap came out in 1984. Since then, most mockumentaries have been films, but on a more frequent basis, television shows are being created in a mockumentary style. These films and shows are hilarious in part because they feel more real than traditional sitcoms that include laugh-tracks, and in part because the humor they rely on is often dry. Arrested Development was a critically acclaimed show that aired from 2003-2007. Arrested Development is a comedy about a dysfunctional family, the Bluth family. The head of the family, George, was a highly successful real estate developer until he was one day arrested for fraud. After his arrest, his son Michael tries to run the family business so it can continue, so he can support his entire family, and so he can hopefully clear his father's name. Yet as he does so, Michael, who is a relatively normal and well-adjusted adult, has to deal with his incompetent and immature brother Gob, his other inept and anxious brother Buster, his spoiled sister Lindsay, her confused gay husband, and their daughter Maeby and his son George Micheal who seem to fall in love with each other. Most of the humor revolves around the dysfunctional family members who have their own ridiculous problems but also struggle to interact with each other. Beyond that, the show also satirizes many other pop culture references and includes long-running jokes that faithful fans of the show will enjoy. The Office is another great mockumentary that began airing on NBC in 2005. Recently in 2009, the show began being aired in syndication on satellite TV stations, so if you've missed the last few seasons make sure you catch up with old episodes to best understand the relationships between the show's various characters. As the title suggests, the show is about a group of co-workers who work in an office. The Office is located in an average town in Pennsylvania and is part of a branch of a large paper corporation. The show's hilarity results from the wacky relationships within the office, which is mismanaged by an immature manager, played by Steve Carrell, who really just wants everyone to like him.
