When the fiance of Soo-hyeon (Byung-hun Lee), a secret agent of sorts, is found brutally murdered, he coldly requests two weeks off from his job and starts a private hunt for the killer. Using tips from his colleagues, it doesn't take long for him to track down the culprit, serial rapist and killer Kyung-chul (Min-sik Choi). But catching him, it turns out, is only part of Soo-hyeon's plan. After brutalizing the psychopath, the agent simply lets him go.

It's the start of a cyclical catch-and-release strategy designed to inflict the sort of pain and fear that Soo-hyeon's fiance felt before dying. Using a GPS device, he tracks Kyung-chul's every move, as the brazen murderer continues to assault, rape and/or kill everyone in his path. When he least expects it, the agent pops in for another round of brutal torture. But how far can Soo-hyeon let this twisted game go on before he becomes just as sadistic as the man he's tracking?

I Saw the Devil is a jaw-dropping experience, full of extreme violence, frank sexuality, dubious morality and an over-the-top storyline that veers from unspeakable tragedy to borderline comedy. It turns the standard horror move slasher scenario on its ear, with a serial killer being stalked and meticulously hunted and tortured. What initially feels like a been-there-done-that affair becomes something exciting and original, morphing unexpectedly into a perverse comedy of protracted, over-the-top vengeance.Min-sik Choi's tour de force performance sells the comedic potential of the killer's torment with his exasperation over the multiple beatdowns he suffers, but he also seamlessly maneuvers into the remorseless monster whose reprehensible actions fuel the horrific elements of the story.
