Watch Out For Summer Dental Emergencies
Dental care is a year round commitment, not just a seasonal one
. Whether it is summer or winter, taking care of your teeth shouldn't be more or less difficult. During the summer months you may be out and about more often than you were in previous seasons. Enjoying the weather playing sports, and cooling down with something cold to eat and drink, or even jumping into the pool for a refreshing swim are all activities that can take place this summer. However, summer can also be a time for dental emergencies and problems to occur.
Follow These Simple Summer Tips
With picnics playing a huge role in the summer festivities, sometimes you forget to bring the right tools. When tools are missing, you may be tempted to use your own teeth to open bottles or packages, but don't. The consequences of using your teeth as tools are hairline or micro cracks that are hard to see, but will lead to more serious problems in the future.
While participating in sports, it is always important to wear a mouth guard. Sports are a popular past time hobby, but it is important that you protect your teeth while participating. Whether you are a recreational player, or a professional sports player, you should always protect your teeth by wearing a mouth guard. Mouth guards help to save your teeth, and are fairly inexpensive. For added protection, your dentist can even create custom-made mouth guards for you.
Additionally, during the summer months you may enjoy more sodas and sweets. However, the bacteria in your mouth thrive on sweets because they are converted into acids, which result in damage to your teeth. If you are to drink a soda or eat sweets, be sure to brush or rinse after consuming sugary products.
What if I Knock Out a Tooth?
Whether you were participating in a sport, or simply walking down the street, if your tooth is knocked out it is important to retrieve the tooth, hold it by the crown, and rinse off the tooth root with water if it is dirty. Do not scrub the tooth, or remove tissue fragments. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth back into place-making sure it is facing the right way. Never force the tooth back into the socket. If you cannot reinsert the tooth into the socket, put it in a small container of milk, or a cup of water that contains a pinch of salt, if milk is not available. Knocked out teeth with the highest chances of being saved are those seen by the dentist and returned to their socket within an hour of being knocked out.
