Flashbacks begin most episodes. These flashbacks show that Henry Spencer wished that his son would follow in his footsteps and become a law enforcement officer. In preparation, Henry helps Shawn hone his powers of observation and deduction, often using games and challenges to test him. Each flashback also sets the theme for the episode, based on the challenge Shawn's father presents him. Shawn originally becomes known as a psychic when, after calling in a tip on a crime covered on the news, the police become suspicious of his knowledge. Theorizing that such knowledge could only come from the "inside," they decide to arrest him as a suspect. To avoid being sent to jail, Shawn uses his observational skills to convince all present that he is psychic.
"Psych" debuts one of its most hyped tribute episodes on Dec. 1 with "Dual Spires," a pitch-perfect ode to David Lynch's iconic 1990 series "Twin Peaks." Though Hitchcock, "Jaws," "Friday the Thirteenth" and a number of other less-elaborate homages have all come before it, star (and episode co-writer) James Roday says this is the thematic one-off he always wanted to do. Zap2it spoke with Roday before the episode's premiere, and the "Twin Peaks" ?ber fan explained how it came to be -- and how tackling the eerily whimsical tone was not an easy task. "I started talking about it in the first season," Roday tells us. "We thought it was a good idea, but we hadn't really established ourselves as the kind of show that did stuff like that.
It looks like Juliet will hold Yin at gunpoint.
Yin will threaten Shawn and Gus with a needle. (Where Gus worries about germs Monk-style. Can we have a crossover? Please?) Yin's identity will finally be revealed. Some things to ponder....why was Shawn in a picture with Yang when he was little? Will we ever find out why Mary was so obsessed with the case? Why was Shawn targeted in the first place? What happened fifteen years ago when Yin and Yang first terrorized Santa Barbara? All these questions and more will be answered Wednesday at 10pm only on USA! This episode will be jam packed with guest stars, including Ally Sheedy, Cybill Shepard and Jimmi Simpson, all of whom reprise their roles from the previous Yin Yang episodes. Mena Suvari of American Pie fame will also appear in this episode.
"We sort of crafted these characters specifically for the actors that we wanted and crossed our fingers," says Roday, who ended up getting Catherine E. Coulson, Sherilyn Fenn, Sheryl Lee and previous "Psych" guest star Ray Wise, among others. "I think what we discovered is that a lot of them haven't seen each other for 15 or 20 years." Writing in the characters wasn't a problem for Roday, but capturing the Lynchian tone was a bit more daunting. He started by writing scenes he thought would work in the original series and then went from there. "Our audience is willing to give us some stretching room," he says.
Uh oh, Shawn and Gus are in trouble again. I know, big surprise, right? Well this time they're naughty enough to get themselves sent to the police academy to learn basic police procedure. There they meet up with their instructor Nick (played by Ralph Macchio) and I know it's been said many times before but da-amn, it's amazing how young that guy still looks. He looks like he's in his 30's so I figured he was probably around 40, but I was wrong, he's actually 49. Wow.
(And an additional six minutes will be added to the director's cut on the show's season 5 DVD.) Last week, star James Roday took a break from his Las Vegas vacation to give EW the scoop about "Dual Spires," including a confession about the one Peaks person he couldn't bring himself to ask for a cameo.
