Andy Serkis brings the character of Ian Drury to life in a biographical film about the British punk singer who you'll have remembered for the hit, "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick".

Dury had Polio from a very young age and fared to build himself up to be one of the founders of the punk scene in the UK during the 70's, despite his fight with his own body and own mind.

The film begins with Ian having an argumentative session with his band while Betty is upstairs giving birth to Baxter, their son. We witness the disintegration of the band at a gig but also the meeting Denise who he lived with at 'Catshit Mansions' and musician Chaz Jankel. Much of the narrative revolves around Ian's relationship with his son Baxter, which echoes the other distinct theme in the film, Ian's relationship with his own remote dad. The early experiences of Ian's life is powerfully crafted and recounted through his stage performances. Ian's early life, contracting Polio, ending up at an oppressive institution during the '50s for children with disabilities. These scenes are integral to the film as it gives an understanding of the contradictory Dury as the adult, such as abandonment and loneliness essentially what made Ian Dury.

Dury's lyrics are socially and politically poetically observational. None more so than with the controversial

As Dury (seen in the trailer) argues with the head of the Spastics Society that disabled people treated not with sympathy but with respect. I think the part with the intertwining of the 'I am Spartacus' scene and 'Spasticus Autisticus' is very powerful.

The trailer looks really good, and this looks a great biographical film and could well be one of Serkis' best performances to date.

That's not to say it shouldn't have been made, far from it, I think this is going to be a great film with the British audience that connect with the time and the character, and is a great example of some of the better British films that we're producing just now.
