The teams are given separate chances to practice with the weapons to be used in a team challenge, under the guidance of an experienced trainer, after which the challenge itself is played the following day. Everyone on the winning team is safe for the day, while the losing team must nominate two members for elimination after a two-hour break. A group of targets is set up for this purpose, each marked with one player's name; one by one, the team members must shoot the target of the person they want to nominate. No one may vote for him/herself. If two or more players tie for one nomination, the tiebreaking vote is cast by a team member chosen at random by Donaldson. The tied players, and any who have already clinched a nomination, are not eligible to be chosen.

Participants in both competitions have their own car park and do not have to pay to enter the show in order to compete. Entry to the 50 bird sporting competition is ?20 and re-entry is ?17. There is no additional cost for entry into the gamekeepers' clay shoot.

I watched an episode (Trick Shot Showdown) and it was fascinating. These guys had to shoot at an axe blade with balloons on either side. The object is to split the bullet and pop both balloons. And... some of them were actually successful. They were also shooting at 2 inch targets and hitting them, shooting at two targets at one time, and even shooting upside down. The slow motion shots of the targets being hit was amazing. These people are unbelievable marksmen. I'm not a gun enthusiast, but the skill of these contestants was definitely worth watching.

14 men and 2 women from around the country compete for the $100,000 prize and the title of Top Shot. The two marksmen who had the best shots on premiere night had the opportunity to choose their own teams. Each team is given a chance to practice with the weapons they will be using in the team challenge, guided by an expert trainer. The challenge then takes place the next day. When the teams are uneven, the smaller team gets to select the player(s) that will sit out for the challenge.
