Since their Hollywood careers began in the mid-1980s, Joel and Ethan Coen have been entertaining audiences the world over with their wacky films. And their hard work has paid off! They've been nominated for 10 Academy Awards and have won four, two for best original screenplay, one for best directing and one for best picture. Until their newest film, True Grit is released at the end of the year during the holiday season, Americans will just have to sit back and enjoy their older films on satellite tv, DVD or blu-ray. If you haven't seen their earlier work, be sure to watch these five great flicks in high definition.
5. A Serious Man (2009) This black comedy follows the film of a Jewish physics professor who is based on the biblical character Job. His boring life is unraveling and he is trying to better understand the world around him. His wife is divorcing him, his children have problems, and his financial problems lead him to question whether he should put his morals aside to make some extra money. Check the premium channels on your satellite tv for this new release!
4. Fargo (1996) The protagonist of this film has a lot of financial problems, so he hires two thugs to kidnap his wife because he believes his father-in-law will pay a high ransom to rescue her. He didn't hire the brightest kidnappers, and they set off a devastating of events that seemingly create total chaos in the small town of Fargo. Star talent includes Frances McDorman, William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi. Even better, the film has recently been re-released in high definition.
3. O Brother Where Art Thou (2000) This film tells the fictional story of three convicts who escaped from jail during the 1930s. Based on the Odyssey, the characters go on a journey to find money one of them had hidden from a bank-robbery. On their quest they have many adventurous run-ins with characters of all kinds. George Clooney, John Goodman, Holly Hunter star in this amazing film that won a Grammy for its incredible soundtrack.
2. No Country For Old Men (2007) In this Oscar-winner, the main character comes across many dead drug runners and $2 million in drug money. After deciding to take the money, he is chased by a hitman who seems to be able to easily take out anyone he comes across and who totes a powerful airgun around. It seems it won't be long before the two meet and someone will have to pay the price. The film includes great stars such as Tommy Lee Jones and Woody Harrelson. For the best visual effects, watch this one in HD!
1. The Big Lebowski (1998) In this unusual comedy, Jeff Bridges stars as "the Dude," a laid-back pothead who just wants to get his rug back. Because he shares the same last name as a wealthy man who wants to get rid of his money-wasting wife, the dude unfortunately gets mistaken for the wealthy man and as a result, gets caught up in some highly unusual events. John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Tara Reid provide great supporting acting.
