Watching the Competition is Critical to Success with Dollar Stores
In today's business world dollar/discount stores are big business. Where else can shoppers find so many of their core, basic needs and much more for such a reasonable price? Those running a dollar store who are at the top of their game are positioned to excel. Yet as with all types of business there are threats to success with dollar stores. Not only is the pressure on pricing always there, but as more competitors enter the marketplace it becomes a contest to attract and then keep shoppers coming back to your store. In this article I examine some of the steps to take as you examine the competition and determine the right steps to achieve your own success.
Success with dollar stores dictates that you know your competition. While you are looking for those businesses which are already open and operating, always be on the lookout for new companies just entering the playing field. Carefully examine the marketplace for all competitors within 5 miles or even more of your location. But don't just make a list of company names. You must really get to know the competition.
* Look for new methods of operation
It is important to know the basic daily operational methods used by your competitors. As you understand the methods you will see where they are outshining you from a customer perspective, an employee perspective, and even a business perspective. Use this knowledge to make appropriate adjustments in your own operation.
* Look for added products
New in-demand products must be added to your offering as quickly as possible. Yet there will be times when you are not even aware of a hot new product. Look for those items when examining the competition. Then add them to your offering as quickly as possible.
* Look for removed products
If mainstay products disappear from competitor shelves it is important to know why. Find out if there is a shortage, a price increase making it no longer possible for them to carry the item, or if some other reason is involved. Having access to the hot selling, mainstay products gives you an advantage. Use that advantage as long as possible.
* Always be on the lookout for new competition. Repeat the process above to understand how they will be competing and how you can leverage your own business strengths to outshine them. Always know how you are performing when compared to the competition. Continually work to improve areas where your competition shines. Also know your strengths and work to make them even stronger.
