Categories of water that can cause damage: In the world of water damage clean up, water is categorized into three categories depending on the level of threat that it holds. Cat 1 water is the water which comes from broken pipe or sink valve which is broken. Cat 2 us the water which has certain level of harmful substance in it. These substances can be biological contaminants as well as chemical pollutants. This type of water is referred to as grey water. This water can be found in sources like toilets which will have some urine in it. Water leakage from the sumps due to the malfunction of the machineries can also flood the house and this type of water is also put in cat 2. The final category is the deadliest of all. This cat 3 water is referred to as black water. The black water will have high concentration of microbes like bacteria, fungi, viruses and molds which can cause severe damage to health of humans. Sewage water, water from rivers, sea water are some of the examples of water which are considered as black water. Each different category will have a different level of treatment and this is known only to the professionals and hence, calling for professional help is the wisest thing to do.
Categories of damage caused by the water: The degree of damage caused by the water can be categorized in four categories. The first category or cat 1 is the damage where the amount of damage is very less because of the fact that there is either no or very little carpet used. The cat 2 is the category in which the carpet used is of significant amount. Apart from carpet, wooden material, particle boards etc can also be damaged. These two categories are mainly for basements. The cat 2 damage is the one where the rate of evaporation is more and the water vapor can affect the ceiling, floors, sub floors, walls etc. In category 4, the stagnant water will actually cause damage to non porous things like plaster, brick, hardwood etc. Both 3 and 4 require heavy duty cleaning so that the damage caused by the water can be minimized and localized and then eliminated.
