Water Drainage Systems-for Safety And Asthetics

We live in a relatively newer subdivision, one with little neighborhood parks everywhere. As

I watched one being built one day, I wondered about what would happened if it rained, or if the snow melted.I've seen little parks like that with large puddles here and there, and since the strata in most of them now is that wood chip material, which, I might add seems to be a lot softer than the concrete that they used to use in the ones when I was a kid, I can't help but think that the stuff doesn't start to decay and rot pretty quickly.

With that, there are also a lot of bugs and mosquitoes here in the summer, and it seems like these mini swamps full of decaying wood would be the ideal places for them to reproduce and grow. What type of water drainage system has to be in place to keep those little play places safe and sanitary?

When I was a kid, we moved into a bigger home with two man-made ponds landscaped in a xeriscaped garden in the back.Whoever put them in didn't think much about the water drainage, and one of them quickly decayed and became useless.I think we ended up filling that one in and trying to grow some more plants in it.The other one was more stable, but it was right off of the patio, so when it would overflow from rain or melting snow, it would spill over on to the cement patio.

Again, with that, it became a good nesting ground for new mosquitoes as well as a breeding ground for toads, and rather than being scenic and attractive, it would be teaming with tadpoles, usually trying to eat one another.A good water drainage system would have helped keep that water clean and circulating instead of recreating the plagues of Egypt in our backyard.

Our new backyard has a lot of potential. It is small and manageable, which is great since I don't like mowing that much, and the exposure it gets will make it ideal for gardening.I would like to put a water drainage system in that will make sure that any water we use for the gardens or ponds, should we go that route, is cycled and used appropriately and in an environmentally friendly manner.I've had enough toads for a lifetime, and wouldn't mind never seeing another mosquito again.
