Water: One of the body's most essential nutrients
Water: One of the body's most essential nutrients
When it comes to something good you can do for your body, think water. Everyone's body depends on water to help with digestion, blood regulation, temperature and detoxification. Your body needs water, in particular to flush out toxins and to be able to assimilate nutrients.
If your body battles stress, toxins or pollutants on a daily basis - and whose doesn't it relies heavily on the intake of clean, chemical-free water to help it perform these important tasks. The amount of water you need daily will determine how well your body can shed excess fat. Water is also necessary to maintain your skin's moisture barrier and elasticity. Keep in mind that your blood is 90 percent water and it uses the water you ingest to transport antibodies, nutrients and oxygen throughout your body to your vital organs.
According to an article published byDr. Holly Lucille, ND, RN at the Online Wellness Community, "water is so important, and the quality variance of water depending on source so great, that you need to know why drinking sufficient live' non-toxic water will help delay and prevent disease and you need to invest time and energy to assure you and your family a quality water supply." She further suggests that if families can afford it, a whole house water purification system is an excellent investment. It's been noted that quality water is fast becoming a scarce resource; countries, including China, are already buying water by the shipload.
All water is not created equal
There's more than meets the eye when it comes to the water you drink as Dr. Lucille explains, "The quality and attributes of water vary greatly. It is important you know why and which water to choose." She offers these water tips:
Straight from the tap: It's convenient, easy and quick, right? Turn the tap and there it is. But, do you know how many pollutants thrive in your water? Are there health risks that you should be aware of before you take a sip?
Is bottled best: You may have suspected it, but did you know that close to 40 percent of all bottled water actually comes from a tap? It's true. There was also a test commissioned by the Environmental Working Group found arsenic, DPBs and 36 other harmful pollutants in bottled water. The plastic bottles that the water comes in can also contain potentially hazardous chemicals and the impact discarded water bottles have on the environment is mind blowing.
Alkaline water: Most experts agree that this water should not be used for more than two weeks max and for detoxification purposes only. Keep in mind that alkalinization doesn't filter the water.
Distilled water: The long-term use of distilled water can lead to health problems because the natural minerals in the water are evaporated out of it. Also, the contaminants that remain in distilled water are more concentrated because of the distillation process.
Vitamin water: Don't let the name fool you vitamin waters typically contain high fructose syrup, additives, artificial colors, preservatives and are usually made with distilled water
As we know, the earth is comprised of more than 70 percent water and the average adult body is more than two-thirds water! In addition to being necessary for health, water is infused with metaphysical properties because, according to Dr. Lucille, who quotes Japanese writer Masaru Emoto in saying, "Recognizing that all life is composed primarily of water, he wondered if there might be more to water than simple H2O. The very notion is likely to elicit either scorn or amusement among traditional scientists."
Getting your eight glasses a day
We hear it and read it everywhere the mantra is "eight glasses of water a day" but is this true? Or enough? Eight glasses is a good baseline for water intake but if you are dehydrated or live in an arid part of the country or work out a lot you need more. In reality though, Dr. Lucille writes, "there has never been a scientifically-validated one-size-fits-all recommendation regarding the correct' amount of daily water intake for adults. This oft-repeated dogma ignores certain facts regarding adequate hydration. It is a good
