We all know pumps; after all they are so much in use everywhere
. We all know they are used to extract water from underground that is their main task. Technically speaking, a pump displaces a volume by physical or mechanical process and that is what technicians say.
Broadly speaking, pumps fall into three major categories: direct lift, displacement and gravity. These names as can be understood describe the way water moves through them. However, these three categories can be differentiated further. Like Displacement pumps have positive, rotary, peristaltic, plunger compressed- air double diaphragm and rope ones. Then there are the Gravity ones like Syphon and Heron's fountain.
Then there are other categories too like steam, educator jet, mixed flow, steam, valve-less,
radial flow, axial flow, centrifugal, velocity, impulse and hydraulic ram ones. All of these have their specific use and so are used in specific places as per their usage. But, then all of them come with their pros and cons. When they are used these plus and minus points too are considered.
There is some more points on the basis of which these are used. These include horsepower, flow rate, outlet pressure, inlet suction, atmospheric pressure required. However, engineers use Specific speed to identify the most suitable pump type for a particular combination of flow rate and head.
Generally the material used for making pumps is
stainless steel or cast iron. In fact, it depends upon the application of the pump. In water industry specifically and for pharmacy applications SS 316 is used which is a kind of stainless steel or is the name given to stainless steel for such kind of use. While stainless steel is used for giving better efficiency at higher temperatures, the pumping power of a pump is calculated on the basis of Bernoulli's equation. Another method of finding the efficiency is using Thermodynamic Pump Testing Method which uses the ratio of the power imparted on the fluid by the pump in relation to the power supplied to drive the pump. Selection of pump is done by performance curve between pressure head and flow rate.
Various companies make pumps of different kinds. These are bought depending upon the usage and efficiency required. A customer or a company buying these compare the various factors and types as discussed above with quality being the most important factor of all.
