Water Run Off And Your Lawn Sprinkler

With news of potential climate change affecting rain patterns and causing periodic droughts

, water conservation is more on the mind than ever before. The right lawn sprinkler may help conserve water in a variety of ways. Installing a water wise system is a good start. Newer ways of irrigation such as drip or trickle systems may reduce your usage and your bill. There are more ways than ever to learn how to reduce water in your garden and for your lawn.

A sprinkler attached directly to the nozzle of the garden hose is a very traditional way to water the grass. However, make sure the water is not hitting the sidewalk, driveway or running off into the street. If you have an in ground watering system, it might be a good idea to inspect it to see that the heads are still directed correctly and soaking only the areas you want to water.

It may be a misconception of some homeowners that the grass must be watered every day. Some grass does better by developing a deeper root structure by getting water once the lawn begins showing signs of distress. The signs to look for are wilt or discoloration of the blades. Then, apply a deep soaking of at least an inch. Over watering may deplete the soil of needed nutrients.

Two types of newer water delivery systems reduce waste. The first is called drip irrigation. It reduces the pressure of the water to half the regular rate. This allows more absorption and less run off for the garden or the lawn. Many local governments are offering incentives for homeowners to upgrade their sprinkler systems to more ones that conserve water. Further incentives may be available to replace grass with more water friendly solutions. You may learn more by checking with your local authorities or on their website.

Another type of irrigation system is called a trickle system. Water is delivered to specific areas of the garden. It conserves water by eliminating the need to spread the water evenly over the entire ground. Whichever method of watering you use, it may be a good idea to schedule regular maintenance to help conserve water and lower your usage bills.

Besides watering, you can add mulch or choose to plant evergreens or succulents. Making sure that water is delivered as large droplets instead of a fine spray helps avoid evaporation. It might be a good idea to water in the evenings or in the morning for the same reason.

Since water conservation is important when thinking about a lawn sprinkler, take the time to ask any questions you have of a professional. They are found online or at your local garden center and might be happy to assist you.
