Water Softener Basics

Are you used to using hard water? If so, you may be doing so without understanding the harmful effects

. Have you ever considered shifting to soft water? Because it contains large amounts of magnesium and calcium, hard water should be avoided.

To start, magnesium and calcium often stick to things and cause scale formation in pipes and water heaters. These scales obstruct the flow of water through the pipes and block heat. This will eventually lead to clogged pipes and increasingly expensive heating bills. Scales likewise damage laundry machines and other home appliances that use water. Additionally, soap reacts poorly with hard water. This actually reduces the soaps lathering abilities. This is why hard water makes taking a shower or bath more difficult.

To prevent this, you can filter the water by distillation or reverse osmosis. This will eliminate traces of calcium and magnesium in the water. Or better still use a water softener which is less costly than filtration. A water softener simply replaces the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with other ions like sodium or potassium. Since sodium doesn't destroy pipes or work poorly with soap, the problems associated with hard water are solved.

You may wonder how a water softener works exactly. The water in your home passes through a chemical matrix called a zeolite or plastic beads that are covered in sodium ions. As the water passes, the sodium ions replace the magnesium and calcium ions. The zeolite or beads are eventually saturated with magnesium or calcium. Once sodium has been eliminated, the beads stop the water softening process.

A water softener basically operates by removing the hardness of the water by simply collecting minerals naturally found there. Once these minerals are gone, you enjoy soft water. Its important to make sure that the water found in your home is safe for drinking and using daily.
