Water Softeners - Why Use Them?
When water is hard, it can cause any number of unsightly problems
. Scaly deposits on sinks and in showers, water spots on glasses and other dishes, scratchy and faded clothes, dull hair and having to use more laundry detergent and shampoo. All of these issues and more are the cause of hard water, deposits of calcium, magnesium and other metal cations. When water is soft, we don't require as much soap and lather, dishes rinse cleaner and there won't be as many unsightly deposits in our sinks and showers.
Hard Truth of the Matter
While many people may already be aware of some of the effects of hard water, many may not know that hard water is costing them money as well as time. Appliances such as gas and electric water heaters consume more energy when using hard water when compared to household appliances that use softened water. Scale and sediment also builds up in appliances that use hard water, which makes it that much more difficult for them to conduct heat.
Benefits of Both
Softening water has its benefits, but it isn't designed for everyone. Individuals with circulatory or heart problems may want to either only soften hot water or not soften water at all. The reason for this is that hard water actually has some health benefits since it contains small amounts of vital minerals, which are excellent for combating cardiovascular disease. It's suggested to install a bypass to the kitchen water supply that's used for cooking and drinking.
While they can cost upwards of a thousand dollars initially, water softeners can save you even more money in the long run. Soft water doesn't take as long to heat as hard water, and water pipes won't become as clogged when soft water runs through them. Skin treated with soft water is softer, which means that more money won't be spent on lotions, conditioners and other products. You won't have to spend as much time scrubbing and cleaning since water doesn't cling to the shower as often with soft water.
Individuals with dietary restrictions should be aware that water softeners add sodium to the water. How this works is water softeners exchange ions. Whenever hard water comes into contact with the cation resin beads, the ion exchange process occurs when hard mineral ions pass through the softer mineral tank which have soft ions.
There are benefits to hard water just as there are benefits to soft water. Soft water is undoubtedly better for cleaning, saving money, household appliances and clothes while hard water seems to be better for human health. Research different types of water softener systems to see which is better suited for your personal needs and your wallet. Make a soft decision to a hard choice.
