Water - The Best Beverage For A Healthy Body

Water is one of the most basic elements in the world and it comprises a large portion of our body

. About 70% of our body is made up of water, most of which can be found within our cells (intercellular space) while the rest is in our blood vessels and interstitial spaces. Even our muscles, lungs, and brain all have water and these organs will not be able to function well without enough water content. And because we constantly lose water when we sweat, urinate, and breathe, we need to keep ourselves hydrated to replace this routine loss of fluid in our body.

We have heard time and again that we need to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to prevent dehydration. But what if we don't? What will happen to our body if we are not able to replace the water that we lose every minute?

Our body has an internal mechanism to detect if our body's water content is at very low levels. It can compensate by shifting water from the cells into the blood vessels and our kidneys will try to limit the water that goes into our urine. But these are just our body's "first aid" approach to the continuous loss of water. When we feel thirsty, it is a sign that our body is beginning to dry up and we need to replenish its water content. Failure to do so will lead to dehydration which causes muscle cramps, weakness, lightheadedness, and in severe cases, even coma and organ failure.

To enable our body to cope up with the routine loss of body fluids, it is vital to keep our body hydrated at all times by taking enough water. The amount of water we need to drink depends on our body weight computed in pounds. To determine the total ounces of water that you need to drink in one day, take your body weight and divide it in half. For instance, if you weight 140 pounds, you would need to drink at least 70 ounces of water to maintain adequate fluid volume. But when you are exercising or performing a physically challenging activity, you need to drink at least one glass of water for every 20 minutes that you are active. Other factors like sickness, arid climate, having diarrhea, and other certain conditions that our bodies are exposed to may require additional consumption of water as more body fluids are being lost during these times.

Eating certain foods rich in water content is also one way of replenishing the fluids in our body. But this makes up about 20% only of our daily water need. The other 80% would be supplied by the fluids that we drink. The best of course would be water, followed by sports drinks, and juices. Herbal teas that are not diuretic and caffeinated beverages are also fine. What is important is that we take in adequate amounts of fluid so that our body can replace the water that it loses every second. For busy people and those who tend to move a lot, a bottle of water would surely come in handy as you can bring it with you wherever you go.

Remember, water may not cost a lost but it definitely does wonders to our body... what costs a lot is when we fail to get enough of it!
