Water Well Drilling Rigs And How They Are Used

Drilling rigs now make creating wells much easier. Traditionally, simply digging holes straight down into the ground using a shovel created water wells. The person digging worked until reaching the aquifer, which filled the well so that the water could be drawn to the surface. Now, drilling rigs can bore holes through dirt, rock and other obstacles, and pumps then draw the water out.

Trucks or tractor-trailers bring the drilling rig to the site where the rig is assembled and made ready for drilling. There are two different drill bits used, depending on the drilling rig. Some implement long cable bits, and others use interlocking steel bits. Regardless of the type of drill bit used, the drill turns clockwise to loosen the dirt and rock and move it to the surface. PVC pipes may be placed around the bore by the drilling rig for reinforcement and to keep contaminants from leaking into the water supply.

It is also possible to place the pipes after the well has been drilled. The drill bits heat up as they turn. They need to be cooled by using water or mud, which helps keep them lubricated. Mud solutions are often premixed to ensure that they are the correct consistency. This solution can also be modified to make sure that the consistency is correct at every stage of the process regardless of the type of rock or soil the drilling rig encounters.

After a drilling rig is positioned in the well, filters are usually installed. The filters are placed at the bottom of the well, and they are used to keep large particles from being pulled up into the water pump. This also makes certain that the water is being loosely filtered. The process requires screens and gravel to be placed at the base of the well before installing the water pump. Secondary water tanks may be used to limit the amount of electricity required to use the pump. When this is done, small water pumps are attached to the secondary tank which is used for outbuildings or houses. The smaller pumps assist water pressure for the system.
