Water damage standard to be revised
Findings from the catastrophic 2007 floods are being included in the revised BSI
code of practice for professional water damage mitigation (PAS 64).
The Publicly Available Specification (PAS) was due for review in 2007, but was put on hold to enable issues from the flooding which affected areas across the UK, including Hull and Tewkesbury, to be included in the revised document.
PAS 64 is a code of practice taking the form of guidance and recommendation, offering a framework document from which professional water damage companies can operate.
It covers the restoration of a water damaged building from the initial incident to the point at which re-instatement and re-decoration commence.

The National Flood School, has been appointed technical author of the code of practice. Previously he worked with his father, who was founder of The National Flood School, as joint technical editor of PAS 64 when it was first published in 2005 .
A steering group has been formed to develop the revised PAS 64, including representatives from the Environment Agency, the insurance industry, policyholders affected by flooding, loss adjustors and national building contractors.
Chris J Netherton said: "The process to achieve PAS 64 was started in 2003 and the code was first published in 2005. It was due for review in 2007, but we wanted to find out what lessons were learnt from the floods of that year before producing this latest code. The robust and demanding process facilitated by BSI means that PAS 64 sets good quality expectations for all concerned. Any contractor working to this specification will be considered to be outperforming current average practice."
The revised code of practice is due for publication in March 2011.

To support its work, the National Flood School has built and uses The Flood House located at its headquarters in Farnham, Surrey.
Believed to be the only purpose-built floodable house in Europe, the structure - comprising of eight rooms and 60 common household materials - is regularly flooded with 1500 gallons of water.
