The cartridges for these type systems are usually sold in multipacks. There are some systems that the filter hooks onto a water bottle similar to a sports bottle which can be capped and carried out. The filter unit for these systems can work on a number of types of water bottles and last for some time. Maintenance on these systems is almost non-existence. The only serviceable part for these systems are the cartridges which are simply swapped out. The old cartridges are simply disposed of in the regular trash. Another good point about these systems is if the bottle becomes damaged or stained, you can simply use another bottle. These do not necessarily have to be replaced if the bottle is unusable. The water filtration bottle systems are common among people who are active outdoors and use campers or tent camping. The down side to these are its harder to keep track of the service life of the filter cartridge.
