Gardeners spend a lot of time and energy growing their own fruit and veg, some of them even keep chickens, but many ignore the most precious resource available and it falls by the gallon on the roof of our homes, gardens and greenhouses each year.

One of the most precious world resources is water. In Britain we are blessed with a generous annual rainfall. It is estimated that a HUGE 10 000 gallons of water falls on an average house roof in one year. Rainwater is much better for your plants and your garden than tap water.

Collect rainwater in water butts connected to the down pipes from the roof of the house, garage and greenhouse. It's really easy to divert the water using dedicated water diverters, these are very easy to install and divert all the rainwater straight into your waterbutt ready for use on the garden. When the water butt is full the downpipes simply take the water as before to the soak away or sewer.

Rainwater is ideal for watering garden plants and most established greenhouse plants. It shouldn't be used for seedlings and young plants as it may contain fungal spores or harbour other plant diseases that may affect young, susceptible plants especially seeds and seedling.

You can keep the water inside the butt fresher with a special water treatment from the garden centre.

It's not just about harvesting rainwater, there's a lot you can do to ensure your plants need less additional watering, this not only saves water but it also saves you time and money.

[] Prepare your plants for every eventuality. If they have been properly planted and the soil is in good heart then they will be able to quickly establish a good root system to source water.

[] Buy and plant new plants in the autumn so they can put down a good root system before warmer weather begins.

[] Use plant foods and soil additives that support healthy roots. Look out for the phosphate (P) content of plant foods which is just one of the nutrients associated with root formation.

[] Add a mycorrhizal fungal mix to your plant roots when planting. Rootgrow is a well regarded and highly endorsed soil additive that contains naturally occurring soil flora and fauna that will form symbiotic relationships with your plants. This fungal colony extends the reach of your plant roots making your plants far more able to withstand drought and enables them to reach deeper and further in the soil to reach water.

[] Feed lawns and plants with quality fertiliser in spring to encourage them to grow new deep roots while there is water available to support this growth.

[] Remove all weeds from the garden but especially in spring: They compete with your plants for water.

[] Mulch to reduce water loss from the soil. It's vital you apply the mulch in the winter or early spring when the soil is saturated. A mulch will control annual weeds and reduces the need for hoeing.
