The insulation of the water tank was structured as a double wall with sawdust in between. Five inches worth of ordinary building tiles make up the thickness of the walls of the other tank. Both of these walls run to the bottom of the foundation, which is about three feet below the ground.

Three openings are present on the lid built from hollow tiles and concrete and the said lid serves as the only protection of the tank. There has been a thin crust of ice around these openings but thin enough that it can be broken up with the fingers. This method in building the walls of the water tanks will stop the process of condensation.

Natural insulation comes with the construction of underground tanks at minimal cost. Were the same tank to be set entirely above ground, the risk of freezing would be materially increased.

The same manner does not have to be given to the external wall. The broader width of the tank at the top enables the tank to force the ice upward and prevents pressure from breaking out onto the walls of the tanks. The northern Iowa farmer who owns concrete tanks on his farm conveyed this to us.

The best cover for tanks according to the farmer who owns the hollow tile tank, is a cover made of reinforced hollow building tiles and concrete. The composition makes it more stable and impenetrable enabling the repression of the development of frosty air in winter and hot air in summer. Insulation against heat and cold is provided by the dead air space within the tile.
