Waterproof Decking - An Essential Part Of Pool Ownership

Unless your idea of a pool is just a hole in the backyard

, you probably have some sort of concrete platform surrounding it. If you didn't go the extra mile and install waterproof decking, however, you're probably inviting trouble down the line. Concrete is as strong as building materials can get, but it is susceptible to cracking and this cracking is almost wholly due to the effects of water over the years. The same is true of those homeowners fortunate enough to have a boat dock. Regardless of whether you're concerned about the area around the pool or the area around the lake out back, though, the problems are largely the same.

Erosion

The joints in your concrete will eventually give way to water if they weren't caulked properly upon installation. Anything being put into constant contact with water needs to be sealed. Unfortunately, contractors like to take shortcuts, and this is one of the easiest areas in which to do just that. It's invisible to the homeowner, who won't know there's a problem for several years. By then, an unscrupulous contractor may have already left town to ply his trade under another name. Even if not, he knows that most people won't bother to go online and look at reviews before hiring him for their next job. They just want a deal. But a great deal on a pool and the surrounding deck isn't that impressive when it all falls apart due to erosion in a few years. This is one reason why waterproof decking is essential.

Wooden Piers

You may be thinking that you have nothing to worry about. You don't have a pool and have nothing made out of concrete. You have a boat dock or pier made from wood. What harm could come to your pier from water? The answer is "plenty". Waterproof decking is perhaps even more important for piers and docks intended to be subjected to the ocean or river over many years. Wood is susceptible to rot over the time and it is just a matter of when if you don't have the right materials. Certain manufacturers sell specific boards intended to stand up to this relentless pounding and you would be wise to look into them if you want your pier to last.

Warranty

If you do decide that you need waterproof decking, make sure you choose a manufacturer willing to stand behind their products. Some manufacturers promise that their materials will stand up to water, letting the homeowner (or marina owner) find out differently in time. If this happens, make sure that it isn't you who has to pick up the repair bill.
