. Clarification: floor mops come in all shapes, sizes, and materials, natural and synthetic. This means that theres got to be one out there that best suits you!
Humor me, and try thinking about your mop as a friend, someone to take care of, so theyll do their best for you when called up to bat, so to speak.
Weve all seen mops carved from a wad of sponge, holey or not; string mops, woven from cotton, or mops with tresses cut from strips of man-made fibers.
No matter the fiber, they get the job done; however, certain types of tools can be more useful than others, in particular situations. In part, it depends on your swing.
The sponge mop is easier to move backward and forward, to and fro, but the excitement stops there. Sponges can hold plenty of water, which you can squish out as you go. Dont lean on them too hard, though.
Watch out using sponge-headed mops on rougher or uneven surfaces as theyre likely to (slowly) go to pieces. Not so good for the conscience.
A more traditional floppy mop, however, can be maneuvered in a variety of ways. The rather fancy figure-eight (also an infinity sign) technique is a sure-fire way to end up with a professional-looking job!
When it comes to laying fancy figures on your floors, there are mops with strips and those with strings.
For a squeaky-clean conscience, a natural, cotton-based product is the way to go. Cotton does have some nice water-absorbing skills on its side. And they can always be recycled down the road as a wig.
What you might not know about floor mops is that they prefer to have a heads up before the next project. In other words, allow them to let it all hang out in the utility closet. Theyll smell better if theyre left standing up straight. It helps them to dry faster. Lets face, it, no one likes the smell of wet dog.
Start your mopping at the far end of a room and work your way backwards, so that you dont have to walk over your work.
While youre working, make sure that you frequently alternate between the bucket and floor routines. Rinsing often will earn you points and ensure a better overall result.
When, not if, your mop starts to smell a bit ripe, toss it in for a spin in your washing machine; it will come out smelling beautiful and clean. Be considerate and always check.
Most mops are masters of versatility, so dont forget to give yours a whirl on the balcony, patio, or terrace, depending on the degree of roughness. In case of hesitation, invest in a second one.
Whatever your preference, there are many types of floor mops to choose from when youre ready to invest. Take the time to inspect the workmanship involved and budget for a buddy you can pair up with for a long run.
