Ways To Choose The Right Hotel For You
Knowing your own expectations for a hotel can make choosing the right one a lot easier
, and having found the right one is key to your level of enjoyment. When shopping around, ask yourself how much time you plan to spend there, what kind of amenities you hope to find or can live without, and whether or not you're looking for a home away from home or just a place to rest your head for the night. These and other factors, along with price, are what determine how many stars a hotel has earned.
You are paying for luxury when you choose a five-star hotel. They offer impeccable butler and room service, high-end bed linens, spa-inspired bath products, and large bathrooms with soaking tubs. The lobbies are laden with marble and fresh flowers and the service cannot be beat. Four-star hotels, on the other hand, may offer rooms that are a bit smaller, linens that are a bit lower in thread count, and less expensive shampoo, but the difference is slight and seems mostly to be in the price. Four-star hotels are still quite an elegant option.
Three-star hotels are clean and comfortable but are less elegant and much less expensive. Their bathrooms are pretty standard (no rain shower here) and the service is fine but they probably won't bow at your feet the way they will at pricier hotels, although many guests find this level of service more comfortable while others miss being treated like royalty.
At two stars, hotels stop advertising how many stars they've earned. They offer a bed for the night but little else in the way of comfort. Two-star hotels are good for long road trips where you only plan to spend a short amount of time at the room before leaving again. "Plain" is the keyword here and you can leave your expectations for down comforters, soaking tubs, champagne and strawberries at home with the cat. There might be room service but you're more likely to order in pizza.
A one-star hotel might be the perfect option for you if the local culture and sights are more important than the size of your pillow or shower (which, incidentally, might be similar in square footage). They're great for travelers who don't plan to spend a lot of time at their rooms and aren't afraid of a little dust or outdated bedspreads. So when you're shopping around for that perfect hotel room, know what your plans are and what your expectations are. As long as you are prepared to pay for the accommodations you desire, you'll go home happy.
