Ways To Extend The Life Of Your Windows

Windows need periodic upkeep to keep them looking good and functioning properly

. Even windows such as vinyl, aluminum and fiberglass which are billed as "maintenance free" need routine maintenance to prolong their life and ensure they continue functioning properly. Proper window maintenance should include cleaning and maintaining the glass as well as the frame. If windows are not properly maintained they will not function properly and will need to be replaced sooner which is not cheap or fun.

Recommended Window Frame Maintenance

It is recommended that you clean the inside and outside of window frames annually at a minimum. More often depending on the amount of dust, dirt and moisture they are exposed to. A good all purpose cleaner and cloth or sponge and brush should do the trick. If a window opens, pay particular attention to the track of a sliding window, the crank and glide of a casement window and the locking mechanisms for all windows. If not cleaned regularly, dirt and dust may cause the window to not function properly. Further, a window may not seal properly if dirt accumulates. Additionally, dirt in and around a windows locking mechanism may cause it to not lock securely.

Recommended Glass Maintenance

The glass on windows should be cleaned, inside and outside periodically. Even the most expensive windows will look terrible if the glass is dirty. Cleaning the interior glass is mostly for appearance purposes. The exterior glass gets a lot of contaminants on it including, dirt, smog, bird droppings, acid rain and other environmental elements.

Contaminants become more difficult to get off the longer they are left on the glass. Heat and cold bond contaminants to the glass and in some cases becoming permanently bonded to the glass. Contaminants left on the glass can cause permanent etching of the glass. A good quality window cleaner or all purpose cleaner work well. If contaminants are bonded securely to the glass you can scrub it lightly using a soft scouring pad.
