A genetic component is suspected in incidences of Psoriasis but, currently, its causes are not fully understood. Environmental factors are also likely to play a part in its severity.

Whatever the exact combination of dry skin and itchiness, one initial aim of any treatment will be to alleviate the symptoms. This is imperative because repeated scratching of dry skin can lead to increased sensitivity, thickening and hardening of the epidermis. Inflammation, soreness and splitting usually follow which, in turn, can enhance the desire to scratch. The itch-scratch-itch cycle is then repeated, only this time with a greater intensity.

Moisturizing is key to tackling the skin's dryness. By aiding hydration, the dead layer of flaky skin cells will soon be replaced by a smooth, supple layer. The best way to moisturize the skin is with carrier oils rather than lotions. The reason is that the oils are absorbed into the cells where they continue to do their work. Oil doesnt evaporate like water so it remains in the interior of the skin cells for quite a while. It moisturizes and nourishes the skin the entire time that it is in the cell. Moisturizing will also help to relieve the irritation and soreness experienced by many sufferers. The resulting soothing is vital as it helps to break the itch-scratch-itch cycle. Further damage can then be prevented and faster healing results.


Choose a mild, natural, fragrance free soap. Shower in lukewarm water only. Afterwards, use a thick, soft towel to dry yourself. Dab your skin rather than rubbing. After you have dried the skin apply light oil such as almond oil in order to protect the skin cells until the body can produce enough of its own natural oils to do so.

Household washing powders and liquids are sometimes the source of itching. You may have to change the detergent that you use in order to help prevent skin irritation.
