Ways To Improve Your Bathroom On A Budget

When money is tight and you are under strain, it's important that your home is as welcoming and stress-free as possible

. An old, out of fashion bathroom can be a reminder of the very stresses that you are trying to forget. However, improving your bathroom does not have to be an expensive project.

Regrouting

Stained, cracked or disintegrating grout is unsightly and may let water behind the tiles, allowing mould and mildew to grow. There are many DIY products available for you to use. Apply a commercial grout cleaning solution, then use a grout saw to remove the old grout. Dampen the area with a sponge, then fill all the surfaces with your new grout. Make sure you have the correct grout for tiles. Use sanded grout if the spaces between the tiles are greater than 1/8" but make sure never to use sanded grout on marble, as it will scratch the tiles. Clean off any excess grout with a damp sponge. When the grout is dry, apply a grout sealant to prevent staining and mildew growth.

Repainting

A fresh coat of paint can update the look of any room instantly. Make sure to use a high-gloss paint, as this will best resist the dampness of the room. Some paints, specially made for bathroom use, can even dissuade the growth of mildew and mould.

Adding New Tiles Around Baths And Sinks

Old-fashioned tiles or those that are cracked or discoloured can ruin the look of a bathroom, even if all the appliances and fittings are brand new and well cared for. To retile your bathroom, remove the grout between the tiles, and then insert a putty knife behind each tile to pry it off the wall. Remove any remaining adhesive and apply thin set mortar. Comb the mortar and apply the tiles. Gently hammer each row of tiles so that they are level. Use spacers to ensure that they are evenly distributed. Allow the mortar to dry beffor applying grout and sealant.

New Mirrors

Mirrors that are chipped or cracked, or have stains or old paint on the frames look terrible, as they immediately draw the eye whenever anyone walks into the room. New mirrors are easily obtained, and you will know exactly what size and shape will fit the room that you have. You may find that the light they bring into the room will make it seem much more spacious.

Chrome looks effortlessly modern, and will instantly revitalise your bathroom's look. Chrome will go with any kind of colour scheme so that you need not fear that you will have to buy new appliances if you decide to change up the look of your bathroom.
