Pre-paid cell phones may seem like a good idea if you're only going to use them for emergencies. However, it can be easy to go over your limit for minutes, and some plans have minutes that expire. If you do use a pre-paid cell phone, watch your minutes carefully and make sure to use a plan where the minutes don't expire.

If you have a teenager in the family, it's not a good idea to choose the cell phone plan with the lowest amount of minutes. Don't underestimate the amount of time they can spend on the phone! Overages will end up costing you quite a bit in the long run.

If you have a cell phone, it's usually okay to cut off your home phone line. Many cell phone plans offer free nights, weekends, and long distance calling, so you'll save quite a bit by simply using your cell phone. If you're paying for AOL service, you can drop it safely since you'll already have all the features that AOL offers with your broadband connection.

Heating and electricity can easily be one of the highest bills. To make sure your house is heated efficiently, be sure to maintain your boiler and hot water heater. You can save money on heating by bundling up and turning down the heater. Many homes have bathroom and kitchen vents to heat these rooms in the winter, but they're an unnecessary luxury and you can stop using them to save a few dollars every month.

When doing the laundry, you can save on electricity costs by using cold or warm water instead of hot water. If you're really looking to save some extra cash, you can hang your clothes out on the clothesline to dry instead of using the dryer.
