Ways To Prepare For The Sat Act

The SAT and ACT exams are critical factors in the college admission process

, so it's important that you do your very best. As a general rule, to do well on the tests you should be taking advanced high school courses, improving your vocabulary by reading and reviewing flashcards, and memorizing the rules and formulas in your English, math, and science classes. In order to ensure you get a good score, however, it's more than likely that you'll need to do some additional studying. Everyone has different studying preferences and tactics; the way that one person prepares for the test might not be as effective for you. Evaluate your specific situation and needs to determine which will be the best.

Many students buy preparation books that teach concepts on the tests as well as test-taking strategies. The most economical choice, these books typically come with practice tests. Taking lots of practice tests is one way to get you in the right mindset; you'll be familiar with the format and therefore more comfortable while you're taking the test. It's also possible to just buy practice tests--either at a bookstore or online--for even less money. However, if you take a few practice tests and find you just don't understand some of the questions or principles being tested, you might want to get a book that can explain these to you. Or you can try a prep class.

Prep classes are certainly more expensive, but if you struggle with standardized tests, feel very under-prepared, or are just plain nervous, they can be a worthwhile investment. Like prep books, the classes will teach concepts that will show up on the tests as well as strategic approaches to the questions (process of elimination, smart guessing, etc.). Unlike prep books, they will also assign homework and give practice tests in a simulated test environment, which is excellent for students who don't test well.

If you don't feel comfortable going to a class, need more personalized instruction, or simply don't have the time in your schedule, consider hiring a personal tutor. The nice thing about a tutor is that the one-on-one interaction is a powerful motivator. Tutors also give immediate feedback and can tailor the lessons to meet your needs specifically--unlike a class which will cover all of the subjects equally, regardless of your particular aptitudes. Tutoring sessions can even be done online, eliminating the need to physically go somewhere.
