Ways To Taking Care Of Baby Chickens
There are many things to consider in rearing baby chickens
. For first time chicken farmers, some advice might be needed in how to care for baby chickens.
Feeding baby chicks should be easy. Chick starter or grower feeds are available at pet and livestock stores. As hatchlings, they cant locate their food so you have to place it near them. As they grow older you can put their food in troughs. Baby chicks should never run out of food, throughout the day and into the night, they will eat constantly. Incorporate some egg yolks into their diet to provide extra nutrients.
Investing in a good feeder for your baby chickens can also be a good investment. You can buy feeders which you can use for your baby chicks. Some people think that using bowl or dish for feeding is great but it is not actually. Using such equipment for feeding can cause your chicks unnecessary things like untidiness and fighting amongst themselves. It is safer to really use a good feeder for your chicks if you want them to stay healthy and strong.
Give them a steady supply of clean water. Purchase a one gallon water container for 50 chicks. Mixing sugar with water is recommended for the first 2 days as this will give the baby chickens extra energy. Make sure that they drink enough lukewarm water to guard against dehydration.
Always keep the baby chickens warm because it is important for their survival. Check the temperature constantly and make sure that they are not cold. It is advisable to put a bulb inside the pen to provide warmth but dont get it too close to the baby chickens. As they get older, you can take out the bulb since they can already survive without extra warmth.
Chicks do their bowel movements very often. On this note, lining their house unit with a good absorbent material should be done. An inch thick pine shavings is effective as an absorbent. It is not also advised to use newspapers or papers to absorbent poops from chicks as these are not effective as an absorbent. Poops cause slippery surface, which is a factor for chicks to have the so-called splayed legs or a deformity that can also cause the affected chicks being picked by others until they die. If you want to avoid this deformity for chickens, you should invest in good absorbent then.
To be a successful chicken raiser, it is important that you know what to do in caring for baby chickens.
