Ways To Transport Your Car

If you're moving across the country or to a new country altogether and want to take

your car with you, there are a several shipping options from which you can choose.

Usually, the cheapest option is to move the car yourself--either by having a family member drive it or by towing it behind the moving truck. If you tow, you can choose a dolly or a trailer. A dolly (the front two tires are off the ground) is more affordable but will put miles and wear on your car. A trailer (all four tires are off the ground) is more expensive but, obviously, doesn't put any wear on the car. Of course, if you tow the car yourself, your mileage will be worse, and you'll pay more for gas. This may still be cheaper than paying someone else.

If you aren't comfortable towing a car or if you're flying to your new home, you can hire someone to move the vehicle for you. A cheap option is to pay someone to drive the car itself. Naturally, you'd need the background checks and insurance in place to guarantee your car's condition and safety. You will add miles to your car, and you'll need to make arrangements to send the person back. Alternately, you can go with a freight company and have your car shipped by Amtrak's Auto Train route. A more convenient method, however, might be to choose an auto transport company, since they specialize in vehicle transport. This is probably the best choice if you are moving oversees.

An auto transport company further offers a variety of shipping options, including open or enclosed transport by truck and/or boat to drop-off sites or even to your front door. Open transport on a truck or boat is less expensive than enclosed; however, your car will be exposed to the weather on the trip. Keep in mind if your car is shipped by truck, the large transport vehicle (75 feet long) may or may not be able to get to your front door, depending on where you live. That just means you'd have to pick it up somewhere. Probably the priciest, but most convenient and assured, method is to have your car delivered to your door (or as close to it as legally possible) in an enclosed container.

No matter what option you decide, be sure to verify the company's credibility and to get quotes from several places.
