We can play the game without the carrom powder. However the board undergoes wear and tear thanks to the wooden surface of the coins and striker which in turn causes friction while movement along the surface of the board. This causes rough patches to develop along the board and board eventually loses its life in process. Quality of the board and its life can be improved. The carrom powder is sprinkled across the board's surface.

This is primarily done to reduce the friction caused by the wooden coins and increase the smoothness of the board. This enables the game to be played in a smooth and fast manner. The conventional powder among the two mentioned above is the boric powder. It is more commonly found in the market. However science and technology has made advancements even in such smaller issues and come up with a much advanced powder known as the starch powder. Mostly the starch powder is made from potato starch and they all come in tiny plastic bottles. Now they too are easily available in the market and you have variety of quantities to choose from. You have 100gms, 200gms and so on. Some of its best features are non-toxic and brilliant performance when compared to the boric counterpart.

The amount of powder used when it comes to starch powder is pretty less. It's inexpensive and quite messy to handle. Since it is used in lesser amounts the powder can last for several months. There are two sets of coins, white and black along with the board. A timer clock is used to set the time and play accordingly. It is used for recording the time taken by one player to make his/her move. The score counter helps them to keep track of scores.
