We All Have Free Will

Free will allows a person to select an alternative from a variety of options

. However, since decisions are based on values and beliefs, one could argue that free will is limited as families, friends, schools, and other foreign entities shape the values and beliefs of each individual. Furthermore, how these foreign entities perceive an individual's personal traits will determine how the person interacts with them, and therefore integrates to society and makes decisions.

Using this logic, individuals with standard characteristics will perceive the world like the average individual. Furthermore, an individual with unusual characteristics will be perceived differently, thereby altering his conduct. We can assume that cultures who embrace differences as the norm might foster citizens with a higher degree of free will. Conversely, societies that segregate differences tarnish perceptions, thereby restraining the will of its citizens.

I believe having a tainted perception of the world motivates individuals to behave extraordinarily. Personally, I often felt like an outsider looking to be accepted by others. As the different schemes and ideas that I came up to fit in didn't work, I concluded that institutions and traditions were created to manipulate people. Nothing appeared true, i.e. pure. The more cynical I became, the less I trusted others.

Because my perception was distorted I misinterpreted the human spirit; however thanks to friends and family, I understood that without love, I was nothing. To love means to act on faith and hope withstanding suffering, pain, and humiliation, among other things. It's the noblest feeling because it does not ask for anything in return. One must not expect to receive love; rather, one must give it generously.

To love requires concentration to free my mind from expectations; it requires humility to accept my limitations; and it requires consciousness to judge actions and reasons instead of people. Achieving this allows me to detach from the perception I've absorbed from others, and thereby free my will. Though free will enables me to make my own decisions, I must assume the responsibility for all the choices I make.
