We're Bigger Than Fear
How often do we talk about fear in our personal lives
? OK, maybe we don't always talk about it - but we do know it's there. We recognize it part of the time, move to release it (or face it) in certain cases. Once we face that fear - the energy and power on the other side is nothing short of inspirational. Yet how often do we choose, consciously or unconsciously, to suffer in that fear for some period of time - before we step up and face it.
Remember the last time you did something that terrified you? My bet is that after you faced that scary thing - you felt like you could conquer the world on the other side, right? You went forward with a renewed enthusiasm, a fresh perspective and an open mind to a much broader array of opportunities.
So why don't we do the same in business?
Why are so so afraid to admit that we have an Achilles Heel, a fear of some thing in our business present or future that stifles our ability to grow or move forward?
We see that new competitor moving into our customer base. In most cases, we'll either launch a full blown attack or stay silent and wait it out, hoping they will go away. Both responses are from fear - and neither are exactly the most thoughtful, strategic response.
Our product has a problem - and instead of fessing up and admitting it - we often either blame others or refuse to admit that there's an issue. (Steve Jobs and the iPhone 4 come to mind). Both of those responses are from fear - or ego denying fear - and again, neither are the best option.
We get a big promotion. Suddenly we are way over our heads - but we don't ask for help or admit our situation. We're afraid of being found out as unworthy - so we suffer, push too hard and more often than not end up flirting with failure. Would asking for help have been that difficult?
I have my own personal fear stories. The latest one concerns my book, Defy Gravity, that's releasing a week from today. I wanted to write that book for over a decade- but there was always an excuse. Some were real and some were procrastination. But when it came right down to it - I was safe and comfortable doing what I was doing as a consultant. Writing the book, along with the transition in my career that would come with it was my life dream - and my fear. It took me over a decade to face that fear and make the leap. I'm sure that during the extra decade I learned a lot to add to the book. But I also am sure that I avoided that step in my life for a decade because of - fear.
Today - I wouldn't change a thing and I'm so grateful I faced that fear. And I'm facing the next fear as we speak - the fear of putting your work out for all to see, putting yourself out for all to see. And ya know what? I'm thriving!
Fear is the enemy of expansion and growth. It's also a pretty silly reason for avoiding the truth in business - or our personal lives. We're bigger than fear - so why not just step up?
How do you step up to your fears? What successes have you had?
