Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala

, is one of the leading tourist destinations in India. And, if you are planning to visit Trivandrum, then it would be better to have a good idea of its climatic conditions. Trivandrum is situated at 830N 7654E / 8.5N 76.9E / 8.5; 76.9 on the west coast, near the southern tip of mainland India. It is surrounded by Arabian Sea to its west and the Western Ghats to the east. The city lies on the shores of Karamana and Killi rivers.

The area can be categorized mainly into two geographical regions, the midlands and the lowlands. The midland region constitutes the low hills and valleys adjoining the Western Ghats. The lowland is a narrow stretch that covers shorelines, rivers and deltas. The largest freshwater lake in the district, namely; the Vellayani Lake, lies in the suburbs of the city.

Highlands constitute the eastern suburbs of the city. The highest point in the Thiruvananthapuram district is the renowned Agasthyarkoodam which rises 1869 m above sea level. Ponmudi and Mukkunimala are some of the well-known hill-resorts near the city.

Climate of Trivandrum

Trivandrum city enjoys a favourable and moderate climate that borders between a tropical savanna and a tropical monsoon climate. The mean maximum temperature of the district is 34 C and the mean minimum temperature is 21 C. The humidity is extremely high and could shoot up to around 90% during the monsoon season. As Thiruvananthapuram is the first city that lies along the path of the south-west monsoons, it gets its first showers in early June. The city gets heavy rainfall from the receding north-east monsoons, particularly during October. While December, January and February are the coldest months, March, April and May are the hottest. The winter temperature falls to about 15 C and highest temperature recorded is 37 C.
